Be prepared to spend some time on this installation. It will take around 10 to 20 minutes to complete, but part of that time is because of virus definition updates.
You need to head to BullGuard’s website and download the file. After executing it, the download process will begin. During the installation process, you will be prompted to create an online account, so by the time you’re done with installation, the program is ready to go.
We were able to install the program in around 10 minutes. If you have any problems installing the program, you can get general assistance from tech support or you can pay $29.99 to have them remote control into your computer and do it for you.
Detection and Removal Tools
BullGuard Antivirus uses definition matching to detect known viruses on your computer. They use a combination of signature matching and behavioral analysis to identify malware programs on your machine.
For those worried about having to share computer information, BullGuard doesn’t collect data from your computer about potential threats like many other antivirus programs.
Virus, Spyware & Malware Protection
BullGuard offers solid protection against a wide variety of viruses and is regularly updated with the latest definitions to keep you safe. Furthermore, it doesn’t slow down your computer as much as other virus scanners.
If you’re worried about Malware (Spyware and Adware), BullGuard offers this protection as well. These programs slow down your machine and in some cases can disable certain features like web browsing. BullGuard stops the problems before they cripple your machine.
The one area that can be improved for this program is Ransomware. It presently doesn’t offer protection against various Ransomware threats. Ransomware is a form of malware that essentially hijacks your PC and forces you to pay a ransom in order to regain access. This is an ever-evolving threat and we hope to see BullGuard offer protection from it in the future.
Additional PC Protection
If you are looking for a bunch of extra features with this program, BullGuard isn’t going to have them. The only extra features you get with BullGuard are safe browsing and Spamfilter. However, these features shouldn’t be discounted as they are extremely important.
There are a lot of malicious codes hiding in websites and you can get infected by surfing to suspect sites. BullGuard helps protect you from these malicious codes.
Another major source of infection are spam emails that tell you to go to these suspicious sites or they send you attachments that can infect your computer. BullGuard filters out the majority of these files to help keep you safe.
If you want to guarantee that you’re protected from hackers doing a forced attack on your computer, you need a firewall. Those looking for extra firewall protection from this program will be disappointed as it doesn’t offer any. You must upgrade to their Internet Security or their Premium Protection program in order to get this feature.
Note that Windows comes with a firewall by default, so unless you don’t find this sufficient, we wouldn’t consider this a deal breaker for this antivirus.
The interface for this program is very simple, looking more like a smartphone app than a PC program. When loaded, the program defaults to options for every product that you’ve signed up for. Any programs you haven’t purchased will have an up arrow telling you to upgrade.
The antivirus module offers you the option for a full scan by default. If everything is “OK,” you get a green checkmark in the upper left hand corner.
Like many other antivirus programs, BullGuard Antivirus offers a limited free trial, theirs being 15-days. Afterwards, you must subscribe to continue using this antivirus software.
One thing we like about their subscription service is that you don’t have to commit to a year. A six-month option is available. With that said, you must purchase a license for each machine you wish to use the program on. It does not offer the ability to cover multiple machines with one subscription.
A six-month subscription is $20.95 while a yearly subscription is $29.95. For those wishing to go longer, you can get two years of protection for $47.95 or three years at $59.95.
BullGuard offers a 30-day money back guarantee on all their products.
Overall, we liked BullGuard’s tech support. They do offer extensive help center as well as a solid support forum. Should you need help from a live support agent, you have two options.
The first is email support that is 24/7 for the US, and during normal business hours for other countries. Second is a live chat option, also available 24/7.
One area they are lacking is phone support. They do not offer phone support to their customers, which is weird considering that is a standard feature for most antivirus programs.
There are paid support features available for those needing extra help removing viruses or installing their software. Services are quite expensive and we recommend only using them as a last result.
If you opt for their Virus Removal Premium Support, you are going to pay $99.95 and the service is only good for one intervention and only within 3 months. It is best to only buy this when needed.
While some companies focus on giving you as many features as possible in their software, BullGuard focuses on providing solid antivirus protection. Those looking for basic antivirus and malware protection and aren’t worried about a ton of “advanced features” should give this a try. You can always upgrade to one of their other advanced products at a later date.
