There are also tools to make behind the scenes tasks, like record keeping and staff management, smooth and effortless.

features Features

Product management is easy with Shopify’s POS system. Inventory managing features include the ability to track stock counts and automatically stop selling a product as soon as it’s depleted. A “smart collections” feature automatically sorts products by vendor, inventory level and price. Barcode support is available with the retail package, allowing you to quickly scan orders. Products can easily be assigned existing or new barcodes.

We were also impressed with Shopify’s customer management capabilities. When a new customer places an order, a profile is automatically created. You can easily learn about an individual’s shopping habits with a quick glance at their order history. Both online and in-store transactions are included, so you don’t miss a thing no matter where the order was placed. You can also easily find a customer’s contact info and set up email marketing notifications so loyal customers never miss a sale.

Several features make checkout quick and easy for the staff and customer alike. Staff can quickly offer discounts on a full order or one product. Notes can be attached to orders to keep track of custom requests and other details. Easily record a shipping address so items can be shipped to the customer at a later date. Receipts can be customized to include your store’s website URL, hours, or policies and promotions.

Shopify allows you to track payments on a credit card reader you already own. The system allows partial payments on orders, splits tenders, and accepts major credit cards, gift cards, and custom payment types.

Ease of Use Ease of Use

The interface of each main screen on Shopify is simple and intuitive. The analytics section includes a comprehensive, actionable dashboard that tracks your sales, orders, and traffic to help you make the right choices for your business, fast. Product reports give you insight into your store’s growth, so you can see which products are selling and which ones aren’t. Sales reports are viewable by staff member, time period, location or customer.

Shopify also makes store and staff management simple for everyone. Save time and money on bookkeeping expenses by integrating Quickbooks, Xero, and other bookkeeping software directly into the POS system. Keep track of daily totals by payment type.  Use the Cash Float feature to monitor all cash register adjustments and staff changes throughout the day. Create unique, individual staff PINs with unique PIN codes. All orders and register activity can be tracked by staff PIN numbers.

The mobile app gives you access to the dashboard, inventory management tools, and customer contact info. It also lets you quickly sync inventory, order and customer data between the app and your online store. Online sales can be tracked from the comfort of your couch. Does it get any easier than that?

Hardware Requirements

Shopify works with tablets and smartphones and is compatible with iOS and even Android 4.0 and higher (a rarity in the industry). If you have a checkout counter, you can customize it with a card reader, receipt printer, cash drawer, barcode scanner and more.

Shopify’s free credit card reader can be plugged into your tablet or smart phone. Credit card rates are as low as 2.4% with no additional charge (on the advanced package only). Hardware comes with free shipping, and returns are accepted up to 30 days.

Antivirus Setup Limitations

The biggest limitation of the Shopify POS system is that some features are only available with purchase of the full retail package. This includes some helpful hardware like the barcode scanner/printer and custom receipt printer.

The ability to refund purchases to the original payment method or make an exchange for store credit is not available in the basic POS package, nor is the ability to create custom staff PINs. The “Cash Float” feature mentioned above is also only available with the full retail package.

Pricing Pricing

Basic Shopify includes 2 staff accounts and an in-person credit card rate of 2.7% + 0¢. Various plans with more capabilities and lower rates are available on the site.

Shopify offers extensive customer support. The support team is available 24/7 via live chat, phone or e-mail. They also have a “Help Center” with FAQs and tutorials for non-urgent issues if you’d prefer to resolve them yourself. You can ask for an expert consultant to help you set up the POS.

Bottom Line Bottom Line

Shopify POS offers a comprehensive system for retail business owners with very few flaws. You can count on them to automate everything from inventory management to customer service to accounting, so that you can focus on running your business and giving your attention where it’s needed most.
