features Features

Square Point of Sale makes inventory management easy. The inventory screen tells you your stock count, if the item is featured at different price points, and alerts you to low or diminished stock. You can export your current inventory onto a printable spreadsheet at any time.

The Square Dashboard lets you quickly edit item details like name, quantity and price in real time.  Easily add item modifiers so you get custom orders just right. This feature also allows you to edit employee time cards, menus and prices for different shop locations.

Shopventory is an advanced inventory management, business intelligence and sales reporting service you can add to your Square point of sale system. It calculates your profit margin based on time period, item or category. Stitch Labs lets you track inventory across Square and any other platform you sell through. Integrate many other apps to Square to keep all your records in one place.

At the register, several features make checkout simple. Customers have the choice of receiving a printed receipt or having a digital one sent to them via email or text message. You can also split the tender by cards or take payment multiple ways. You can keep tickets open on tablets and add to orders so customers can pay when it’s convenient for them. The ability to add a suggested tip keeps employees and patrons happy, eliminating math all together.

Square POS also makes it easy to start up your business in a new location with just a few clicks. You can assign employees to the store, build an item library, and adjust prices and taxes across your entire chain of locations.

Ease of Use Ease of Use

There is no training required to start using Square POS. The most important technique you need to know is the “drag and drop” finger motion. This will allow you to quickly move around items and categories on your item grid. Other standard features that make business life easier is the ability to save payment information for regular customers. Employees can also quickly sign in to work on Square.

Offline mode makes it easy to keep your business running even when your internet connection is down. All payment information is stored and saved on the device, and processed when the internet returns. You are charged the standard rate whether working on or offline.

Square Analytics creates many different business reports for you in a few clicks. Sales reports let you easily see your most popular items and sales days. Other reports give you customer statistics and sales comparisons by week, month or year, so you can judge your success and make sure you’re meeting your goals.

Hardware Requirements

Square POS is compatible on iOS and Android devices, but Square also offer hardware so you can create a custom cash register.  They have several types of chip and contactless payment readers available for purchase, and a Magstripe reader comes free. A stand for the readers is also available for purchase. This new hardware makes the bulky credit card reader seem outdated. Barcode scanners, receipt printers and cash drawers are also available for purchase.

Limitations

Unfortunately, some of Square’s most advanced features are only available if you purchase Square POS for Retail separately. This software includes advanced inventory features like low stock alerts and automatic cost of goods and margin reporting. The multi-location reports have more depth with this service. You can also track theft, create vendor lists, employee accounts and much more with POS for Retail.

Pricing Pricing

Square costs 2.75% per swipe, dip or tap. It is 3.5% + 15¢ per keyed-in transaction.

Support

Square has a comprehensive support page including an FAQ section and an online community where you can post questions in a forum. You can sign in for expedited support from representatives 24/7 by phone or email.

Bottom Line Bottom Line

Square POS is a well-rounded service for businesses whether you sell coffee or cradles. Their software is intuitive and easy for anyone to use. A variety of features from bookkeeping integration to auto tip calculation help you run your small business like a well-oiled machine and keep both customers and employees happy.
