While Israel definitely isn’t the worst country when it comes to privacy laws, especially when compared to its neighbors in the Middle East like Egypt, Iran, and Qatar, there are some areas that could be improved. Inflammatory social media posts are blocked, while adult content is restricted unless you contact your ISP publically.
Israeli ISP’s are currently required to provide content-filtering by the government, while the media is subject to censorship from the military due to their ongoing conflict with Palestine.
There’s a market for a solid VPN for use in Israel considering the above, but what is it that a VPN does exactly, and how do they work?
Use a VPN for Israel
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is the easiest way to bypass geo-restrictions with little to no hassle. It creates a secure connection between your device and their server, encrypting the data to keep it safe.
It means that your ISP will no longer be able to track your movements. The VPN will assign a new IP when you first login, which corresponds to the server location that you’ve selected. This can be used to gain access to a range of international content through foreign servers, while it also provides a cloak of anonymity while you’re online as the data is encrypted both ways.
With over 200,000 American expats in Israel, that’s a large audience who are unable to watch US content online, including popular sporting events like the SuperBowl and World Series, and Netflix. Luckily, a VPN service with US servers will circumvent blocks from anywhere in the world, and the same goes for any region with server coverage.
Best VPN for Israel
We looked at the following criteria when judging the best VPN for Israel.
- Server Locations. A solid set of server locations will allow you to access content quickly, while servers in the Middle East are preferable in terms of speed.
- Streaming Services. If you just want access to the latest shows, a wide range of streaming services will be unlocked while using a VPN.
- Apps & Functionality. As most VPNs are designed for use on a variety of devices, we looked at their apps and their functionality.
- Secure Encryption. Privacy is important, so we’ve made sure to choose providers that can ensure secure AES-256 encryption.
- Return Policy. A solid return policy protects you if you run into any problems with the VPN, while it can also be used to trail the speeds and reliability of their service.
#1 ExpressVPN – Our Top Pick
We found ExpressVPN to be one of the best VPN providers for Israeli users. Speeds are always going to be a strong point when it comes to one of the fastest on the market, while it’s a great Netflix VPN. They’re one of the best in terms of customer service with impressive response times, and they keep no activity logs
It’s more expensive than the norm at $12.95 for a month, but it is worth it if you want a super-fast connection for streaming or gaming. You’ll be able to get a refund for 30 days, so we’d highly recommend giving it a try. The VPNs Israel servers will also give you a quick local connection
- $12.95 a month
- $9.99 a month for a 6-month plan
- $6.67 a month for a 15-month plan

#2 NordVPN – Solid, Reliable & Secure
If you’re worried about security above all else, NordVPN could be the best option. Encryption is as secure as any on the list, and they have servers in Israel, Turkey, and Egypt for a connection that’s a little closer to home. NordVPN keep no logs of user data, and they also have hundreds of servers in the US and the UK that can be used for entertainment purposes.
$11.95 for a month puts it in line with ExpressVPN, but it’s a lot cheaper if you go for a longer offer, and they have a 30-day money-back guarantee “for accounts in good standing.”
- $11.95 a month
- $5.75 a month for a 1-year plan
- $3.29 a month for a 2-years plan

#3 HotSpot Shield – US Based Service
With a free service that has helped to make it one of the biggest names in online security, the Hotspot Shield VPN is always worth checking out. Their ‘elite’ (or paid) service is a bit of a misnomer compared to the ones above, but they’re still capable of getting the job done. It’s not the best VPN for Israel, but it’s still a decent option.
They have servers in Iran, Turkey, and the UAE, and they offer secure encryption. It costs $12.95 for a month, while ‘customers can request a refund within the first 30 days.’
- $12.99 for a monthly plan
- $8.99 a month for a 6-month plan
- Premium plan: $5.99 a month for a 1-year plan.

#4 ZenMate – Not Just For English Speaking Users
ZenMate is a smaller provider based in Germany. Their service is the most affordable in the short term at $8.99 for a month, and it’s easy to get to grips with. They only have four servers in Israel, and that’s the full extent of their coverage in the Middle East. It’s not the best VPN for Israel but it does the job. Their return policy is good for 14 days, although we’d probably go for another provider if possible.
Its industry standard encryption hides your IP address as well as your personal details so that you can get around both geo-restrictions and government surveillance.
- $4.99 a month
- $7.49 a month for a 3-month plan
- $8.99 a month for a 12-month plan billed annually

#5 Cyberghost – The Web Freedom Advocates
CyberGhost is the final provider on our list. While the free version of their VPN client is decent in its own right, we’d strongly advise upgrading to a Pro account to unlock the full range of server locations. (They have minimal coverage in the Middle East in either case, which isn’t a great start.)
They do have four servers in Israel, but they’re mostly focused on European countries. (For example, the UK has 121 servers to choose from, giving you a better idea of their priorities.) It costs $10.99 for a month, and they have a 30-day refund policy that is hassle free.
- $11.99 a month
- $5.99 a month for a 1 year plan
- $3.50 a month for a 2 year plan
