PrivateVPN is supported on Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. As is common in the industry, you must sign up before installing the service. Once you have login info, you can download and install. Setup should be simple, but customer service is available if you need help.
The main screen that pops up on launch is easy to use. This interface allows you to connect and disconnect from the service and choose the location of the server. Buttons and tabs are clearly labeled. On the main screen you can access settings, Connection Guard, and there is even a button to access live support. Most other services require you to log on to their website to access customer service.
Features and Specifications
The service provides the basic promises of all VPN services including private browsing and strongly encrypted data. But other services set it apart from most VPNs.
One of these features is “High Quality Network” servers with premium speeds. PrivateVPN apparently purchased internet capacity directly form IP transit providers to build their network. This means you’ll experience superior speed compared to other VPNs, no matter what server you’re using in the PrivateVPN network.
They also have a kill switch feature they’ve named “Connection Guard” built in to the service. It is unique, because you can choose what application traffic to connect to the kill switch.
PrivateVPN is extremely reliable. It easily allowed us to access geo-restricted content on popular streaming sites like Netflix and Hulu. But if streaming is an important feature to you when choosing a VPN service, do your research no matter when you’re reading this, especially if trying to access a well-known platform. Companies are constantly updating software to detect VPNs, so a site that works one day may not work the next.
BitTorrenting and P2P sharing is also supported on the site. Choose your server location carefully though. Some services only designate specific servers for P2P activity. We’re not sure if PrivateVPN does, but even if they don’t, it’s a good idea to choose a historically friendly P2P server location like Sweden to avoid difficulties.
Because of the premium servers we described above, there are minimal speed issues with PrivateVPN. All VPNs slow down your connection somewhat. That’s an unavoidable side effect of encrypting data. But we were able to stream 4K video without any issues during our tests. Download speeds are also beyond satisfactory.
Server locations may seem limited compared to other services, but their premium performance should make up for that minor flaw. There are 40 servers located across 29 countries. Some server locations include the U.K., U.S, Brussels, Sweden, Russia, and Poland to name a few.
Not only does PrivateVPN disclose all server locations, they let customers know of any restrictions on specific servers before signup. For example, some servers (like the one in China) only support a certain level of encryption due to firewall restrictions in the area. Transparency like this is refreshing to see in any VPN company.
PrivateVPN supports many different levels of encryption, but we suggest sticking with the strongest, military grade AES 256-bit encryption whenever you can to make sure you are getting the best protection available.
They have a strict “no logs” policy, which you should be looking for if personal privacy is a huge concern. They only store e-mails on their servers and are located in Sweden, meaning that the laws are in your favor.
PrivateVPN offers three different plans. A year-long plan is $71.40, which breaks down to $5.95 monthly. A three-month plan is $21.95 ($7.31 monthly) and a one-month plan is $8.95 per month. Once you choose your plan, test the service quickly. There is only a seven-day money back guarantee.
The service offers 24/7 live chat support in addition to many self-help resources. There is an extensive FAQ section and a “Getting Started” page that walks you through setting up the software. You can also e-mail a representative for more help.
PrivateVPN goes a step further in offering remote control support. If you are having extreme technical issues, you can download and install TeamViewer on your computer and give a support representative your TeamViewer ID. They can then log in and solve your issue remotely.
PrivateVPN actually delivers the premium service they promise in nearly every area, making them a great choice for anyone, especially users with specific privacy needs. The service offers everything from secure web browsing to a customizable kill switch, meaning that you can engage in high risk-activity with a little more peace of mind.
Beyond providing a great service they also provide customer support that goes above and beyond any other VPN company we have come across. PrivateVPN is a superior service compared to most.
